Wonder Goblin and Skinner first began collaborating on the Fungoid figures in 2016. The first design completed was intended as a resin figurine, and only the arms articulated. Wonder Goblin painted several micro-runs of the resin figure, but due to the lengthy process of creating them, it was retired shortly thereafter. A year or so later, they revisited the Fungoid Man, this time envisioning him as a fully articulated sofubi figure.

Wonder Goblin worked up the concept art based off Skinner’s original painting and pitched the design to him in early 2018. After Skinner signed off on the design, Wonder Goblin sculpted all the pieces in modeling clay and molded the original sculpts in silicone. Mr. Goblin then cast the prototypes in wax. The prototypes were shipped off to Wonder Goblin’s factory in Tokyo Japan, and production luckily took only a few months. They managed to get a premiere release of Fungoid Man in marbled watermelon vinyl just in time for Designer Con 2018. In 2019, Skinner and Wonder Goblin won the “BEST SOFT VINYL” category at the Designer Toy Awards. Since then, they have released many colorways of the character, and the Fungoid Man has become a fan favorite of sofubi collectors around the world.
